Suggestion is the most beautiful form of sensuality.

Images that resonate — beautiful, elegant, sometimes provocative, and always an invitation to introspection.

The photographer

I am Manfred Van Ursel

For over thirty years I have made images — a lifetime devoted to the art of visual storytelling. In the 'Shades of Darkness' series I explore the depths of the human soul: beautiful, elegant, sometimes provocative, and always an invitation to introspection.

Every photograph is weeks in the making — concept, a dialogue with the model, a moodboard, and the work itself in the studio. It is a collaboration between the model, myself, and you, the observer.

There are two ways to make images together.

In both, you are the subject — the difference is who the images are ultimately for.

For the series

Model for Shades of Darkness

Become part of the series — you don't have to be an experienced model, just someone who wants to make something special together. TFP or paid, always on your terms. TFP is not free work but a fair exchange, with the value of a paid session. A privilege, not a right: places are limited and selective. You keep full say over what goes public.

FAQ

Good to know

Does TFP mean it's free?

No. TFP (trade for print) is not free work — it's a fair exchange. I invest my time, experience, studio and equipment in return for the right to publish the images; you invest your time and effort in return for a set of high-end finished photographs — images with the same value as a paid session (from €149), just without an invoice. TFP is also a privilege, not a right: I can only do a limited number each year, and a TFP shoot has to fit the series and add something to the portfolio. So we look together whether there's a fit in concept and vision.

Do I have to be fully nude?

Nothing is required. The series is mainly artistic nude, but covered or implied nude works just as well. You set your boundaries, and we always respect them — including in the moment.

Who decides which photos go public?

You do. You receive a private gallery for approval and have full say. Photos you wish to keep private stay private — in writing, in the contract.

Can I bring someone?

Please do — a friend, partner or family member. Especially for a first shoot it puts you at ease, and I gladly involve companions in the session.

How does a shoot work?

We build a moodboard together beforehand. In the studio we shoot tethered: you see every frame at once on a large screen. A session lasts two to three hours, relaxed and without pressure. I check in with you throughout.

What do I wear? And hair & make-up?

Choose outfits you feel good in and can move freely in; there is a separate changing room with mirror and shower. You do your own hair & make-up, or I book a professional artist. Tip: avoid tight underwear on the day — elastic leaves marks on the skin.

What do I receive afterwards?

From often more than 1,000 frames we work together toward a selection of 24 high-end finished photographs. Luxury albums and custom wall art are available.

Is it safe and discreet? Age?

18+. Every shoot is done under contract, you are insured during the session, and discretion is central. Any touch happens only with prior, explicit consent.

How do you handle rope and restraint?

Rope and restraint here are studies of form, not shock. Simple, suggestive tie-work (harnesses and the like) I do myself; for more involved scenes you bring your own rigger or we find one together. Every session begins with clear boundaries and a moodboard — nothing happens without your explicit yes, and I check in with you throughout. The image is always the goal.

Where and when?

The studio is in Sint-Niklaas (9100), a short walk from the station, with parking nearby. Shoots during the day on Tuesday or Thursday, sometimes at weekends too.
